GREEN DESIGN & REMODELING
What is Environmental Design? Green-Built Home? Eco-friendly Design?
These are familiar buzz words of the moment. Within the last few years,
the construction industry has gone through something of a renaissance
when it comes to the environment. While the practice of Sustainable
Design has been commonplace on the east and west coasts (particularly
California and New York),it has finally come to the Midwest in a big way.
When
you think of Green Design, what comes to mind? Recycled products?
Or reusing products during a project? Or even recycling trash removed
from
a job site. These are all great examples of what green design is. The
thing
that most people don't realize is every aspect of a new construction or
remodeling project can utilize Green or Sustainable Design.
Everything
from where construction waste goes, to how new products are
installed, to what products are installed, can incorporate these philosophies.
When we look at a project from a Sustainable standpoint, we start with
the energy efficiency of the home, the health of it's occupants, the
future value of the property, and finally the sustainability of the building
itself.
While
this may all sound like a lot to take in for just a small kitchen or bath-
room project, we are committed to Green Design and are passionate about
the processes and products we use. All subcontractors and suppliers are
informed up front that we intend for the project to be sustainable.

How
Is A New Home Or Remodeling Project
Certified As Green Built?
The House of Dreams is a member of the Green
Built Home, which is
a national award winning green building initiative that reviews and certifies
new homes and remodeling projects that meet sustainable building and
energy standards.
Homeowners and home builders work together to select features from the
Green Built Home Checklist,
one of the most comprehensive in the nation.
There are over 310 Checklist features to choose from. Each Checklist feature
is given a point value and the new home or remodeling project must earn
a
minimum number of points to be certified. In addition to a wide variety
of
features that conserve energy and natural resources, the Checklist outlines
basic requirements that each home must meet, including energy efficiency,
indoor air quality and erosion control standards. Green Built Home staff
will
review the selected Checklist choices and conduct random site visits to
verify that Green Built Home standards have been met.
