This
Shoreview kitchen remodel won the prestigious Contractor of
the Year
COTY Honorable Mention award for Sustainable Design!
The
driving force behind the design and construction of
this Shoreview kitchen/dining room remodel was the
clients' green lifestyle. When the design phase of the
project began, there were no local green remodeling guidelines
available to use as a guiding tool. We,
therefore, chose to base much of the research and
decision making on the U.S. Green Building Council LEED
for Homes green building tool and the Energy and Environmental
Building Association cold climate guidelines.
The
choice of a down-draft ventilation system for the cooktop precipitated
a conversation on the existing mechanical system. It was determined
that a 94% efficient furnace with an electronically commutated
motor and corresponding 14 SEER air conditioner would be imperative
for replacing the 28 year old furnace and improving long-term
energy efficiency. The mercury thermostats were replaced with
programmable thermostats when additional heating and cooling zones
were added to the home. Digital thermostats regulate temperature
better than the mercury variety and can be programmed to turn
on and off with the patterns of the homeowners. Low-E windows
and full-view glass doors were chosen for their improved insulating
ability and energy efficiency. Energy Star appliances and lighting
on dimmer switches were additional energy saving tactics.
In regards to indoor air quality, construction areas were isolated
from non-construction spaces to reduce the migration of construction
dust and debris. Low-VOC latex paints were used wherever applicable.
Natural linoleum flooring was chosen for its environmental and
design impact- two color tones were chosen to bridge the different
colors of the living room and family room spaces. The flooring
was installed with low-VOC, water-based adhesives. This same hard
surface flooring was brought from the kitchen into part of the
adjoining family room where the clients entered the home from
the garage - creating an easy-to-clean alternative to the existing
plush carpet. Formaldehyde-free insulation was used in the exterior
wall affected by the window and door changes.
As a result of the collaboration of the design team, clients,
and subcontractors, this Shoreview kitchen/dining room remodel
became the first certified green remodel in the
state of Minnesota.
