Arden
Hills "Green" Whole Home Remodel
This
Arden Hills 1961 rambler was in good condition, but
dated and leaky. While the family originally thought they
would simply update the kitchen and bath, they decided
that since they were tearing the house apart anyway,
now would be the prudent time to redo the entire home.
A blower-door test identified how to best address energy
efficiency. And, the family wanted this remodel to be as
environmentally friendly as possible. House of Dreams offers
certified "green built home" remodeling to their clients.
This
project is just the second remodeled home so certified in Minnesota.
The first order
of business for House of Dreams and their
designers/project managers was to develop the design and
plans for bringing this home up to "green" standards.
They
worked closely with the family to identify materials and items
in the home that they wanted to reuse and which items
could be recycled instead of dumped. They salvaged as much
as possible, some donated to the Reuse Center, some sold to
a salvage yard and the rest offered through the online
free market.
With the design complete, House of Dreams then literally
reconstructed the entire building envelope with careful
attention to "green" materials and techniques. The windows
and exterior doors were replaced, gas fireplace inserts were
added, and fiber cement exterior siding with rigid insulation
wrapped everything up tight. Mechanical equipment and
venting strategies were put in place to improve indoor
air quality.

While the remodeling
was completed to demanding "green"
standards, beauty and charm were never sacrificed. Green
doesn't have to look any different, it just functions better.
The custom tile and fused glass vessel bowl sink, along with
an environmentaly-friendly Marmoleum linoleum, custom
cabinetry, and bench seating in the kitchen are just a few of
the gracious features in the remodeled home in Arden Hills.
